A metal frame holds a linen shade, pleated for a softer edge or plain for a cleaner one, and the fabric turns a bare bulb into a warm wash instead of a bright point. The metalwork comes in tumbled brass, antique bronze or chrome, and the bronze reads much closer to black in a real room than it does on a screen. Because the shade sends light down the wall rather than across the ceiling, it lights the space you are actually using — the page, the pillow, the last few feet of a hallway. It hardwires in, so nothing trails down to an outlet.

Two decisions, and neither is hard. The single-head version suits a narrow stretch of wall: beside a bed, at the turn of a stair, either side of a bathroom mirror. The two-head version carries more weight and works where one fixture has to do the job of several, over a console in an entry or along a dining wall. Pleated leans traditional; plain leans quiet.
