Phoibe is a lantern that glows from the inside out.

The shade is mulberry paper — washi — stretched over an iron frame, with a black body under a white shade. The paper does the work: it takes the bulb behind it and turns it into a soft, even glow with no hard edges, the kind of light that makes a room feel settled the moment you switch it on. It plugs into a wall outlet and switches on and off from a push button on the cord, so it goes wherever you have a socket and asks nothing of an electrician. The design follows the Akari lantern tradition; it is a design-inspired piece, not an official Noguchi or Ozeki product.

Four sizes, four places to stand. The 10A is the low, wide one — put it beside a reading chair or at the end of a sofa where you want light at lap height. The 14A slim is tall and narrow, made for a bedroom corner or the gap beside a bed where a wider lamp would crowd the room. The 14A wide gives the same height with more paper, which suits a living room where the lamp has space to be seen. The Large is the fullest of the four and holds its own in an entry or a big room where one tall stand of warm light is the whole idea.
