Pallene is polished brass over ribbed glass, and the ribs are the point.
Metal, brass and glass, domed and shallow. The ribbing is not decoration: it throws light out sideways, not merely downward, and it takes the glare off a bare filament. One bonus shows up only after dark: the ribs print a pattern across the ceiling above it.
One size, wide and shallow, which decides where it belongs. Shallow means it can hang lower than a deep shade without anyone ducking, so it suits an island or a breakfast bar. Wide means a single one usually does a hall or a landing. Give it a warm filament bulb — a cold LED wastes the ribbing entirely.
