A coastal lantern, brought indoors and set down wherever the evening is.
It takes its cue from the traditional lanterns of the coast and is built in the same two materials, wood and glass: an ash or walnut wood frame around a warm white glass shade. The shade takes a standard screw-in bulb and softens it, so a warm Edison globe shows its filament through the white glass and the whole lantern lights up softly, the way a lantern should. It plugs into the wall with a cord and an inline switch, and it is light enough to pick up and carry from a tabletop to a sideboard to the floor, anywhere within reach of an outlet. That is what portable means here: it moves with you through the house rather than living in one spot.
Three sizes, three places to put it. The smallest suits a bedside table or a desk, where you want a low pool of light close to hand. The middle size sits well on a sideboard or a hallway console, lighting the surface without taking it over. The largest belongs on the floor beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa, where it does the work of a reading lamp without a stand. Ash is the paler, cooler grain and reads lighter in the room; walnut is darker and warmer, and looks richest against a white wall. Both are natural wood, so grain and tone vary from lamp to lamp.
