Nerine is two blown-glass shells with a slab of alabaster caught between them.
The upper shell is a dome and the lower one a rounded plate, both blown by hand rather than pressed, so the thickness shifts from piece to piece and the faint swirl marks stay in. Between them sits a disc of solid alabaster with the bulb behind it, which means light leaves through stone at the middle and glass at both ends — one warm core and a halo above and below it. The alabaster is fibrous and translucent, so it glows rather than shines.
Clear glass keeps the whole thing bright and nearly weightless, and it vanishes against a pale wall. Smoke glass is the moodier of the two and holds its outline in a dark room. Then size: the smaller belongs on a nightstand or a dressing table, the larger reads as sculpture and wants an entry console or a sideboard behind it.

Buy a bulb with it: GU10 is the short twist-and-lock type, not a screw base. A 2700-3000K LED reads best through the alabaster. Skip halogen GU10s, which run hot against natural stone.
