Nereus is a vessel of raw stone with a rope tied round its waist.
The body is carved from genuine yellow travertine and left unfilled, so the pitting and cavities stay open the way the quarry left them. Around it goes a thick hand-woven hemp rope, industrial grade, which supplies the only softness on the whole fixture. The glow leaves from the base, which is why it washes downward instead of filling the room. A G9 bulb goes inside, and the whole thing mounts flush enough to pass in a corridor.
It arrives one way, and it wants a tight spot — a passage, an alcove, the strip of wall by a bed where anything deeper would be a nuisance. The rope is a real material rather than a trim, so it belongs in rooms with linen, timber and plaster rather than lacquer and chrome. Pair it with a dimmable bulb and a dimmer if you want it low in the evening.
