Pyrene is a cone of light rising from Carrara marble.

It starts with a base of natural white Carrara marble, and every base carries its own veining. Above it, the stem and cone are painted steel, and the cone is an opal photoengraved polycarbonate diffuser that turns the bulb inside into one soft, even glow. That cone rotates up to 270°, so you point the light where you want it — down onto the page in your hands, or up the wall to lift the whole corner of the room. A foot switch sits on the cord, so it turns on and off with a tap and there is nothing to reach for.

Two finishes, both painted steel over the same white marble. Copper is the warm one — it picks up the tones in wood floors and leather and suits a reading chair or the end of a sofa. Black is the graphic one, a clean dark line against a pale wall, and it holds its own beside a desk or in a hallway corner. Either way, turn the cone down to read by, or turn it up and let it wash the wall behind it in the evening.
