Opal glass holds the light back and hands over something even; clear glass gives it straight to you, filament and all. Brass warms whatever passes it, black keeps back. Three combinations are sold. Brass over opal belongs at a bathroom mirror, where even light on a face beats sparkle every time. Brass over clear rewards a good filament bulb and earns a landing or a vanity. Black over opal is the restrained one, and it will not pick a fight with chrome taps or a chrome frame.
