Alkmene is a mushroom carved out of alabaster.
Cap and stem are both alabaster, so the lamp reads as one object rather than a base with a shade sat on top of it. The bulb is a G9, tucked up under the cap, and the stone sends its light down and outward rather than at the ceiling. Alabaster is translucent, which means the whole lamp lights up, not just the opening — from across a room it looks less like a lamp switched on than like a stone that happens to be warm.
Two sizes, doing two jobs. The smaller earns a bedside table or a stack of books and gives you enough to find your way at night without waking anyone. The larger has real presence on a console or a desk and will carry a corner by itself.
